Introduction

Leva Clinic's initial app release (version 1.0) featured minimal functionality and a basic navigation experience.

The navigation consisted of a top navigation area for notifications and backward navigation, along with a bottom toolbar for contacting Leva, viewing settings, and accessing the web-based Pain Management Program.

As new features were developed, it became evident that the existing navigation system could not support the expanding content without diluting the user experience. I led a project to restructure the app’s navigation to accommodate these new features and provide a more intuitive, user-friendly experience.

Background

Initially, the app offered two key functionalities: prescription requests and treatment reviews, accessed via quick action cards on the home screen. As the product roadmap expanded, additional features like an in-app pain management course, prescription progress tracking, and a comprehensive resources section were developed.

It became clear that the home screen could not accommodate all these features without compromising usability. I led the initiative to redesign the app’s navigation, ensuring a scalable and organized system that would enhance user experience and support future growth.

Impact

Product Team

The new navigation system resolved the frequent question, "Where will it live?" This allowed the team to concentrate on developing valuable features and user experiences.

The End-User

A well-organized navigation system enriched the app, making it easier for patients to access and interact with a diverse range of content. This demonstrated Leva's commitment to understanding and catering to patient needs.

Approach

Objective

The objective was to create an intuitive, visually appealing navigation system, it needed to be scalable, intuitive, and reminiscent of familiar mental models to reduce cognitive load for users. The following features needed to be housed:

Prescription Requests

Treatment Change Requests

Consultation Booking

In-App Consultations

Pain Management Programme

Well-Being Log

Comprehensive Resources Section

Prescription Progress

Importance

Restructuring the app's navigation was crucial for unlocking new features and enhancing the overall value proposition. It addressed the challenge of feature placement, allowing the product team to focus on developing innovative functionalities without being hindered by navigation limitations.

The Result

The result was a positive transformation of the app's navigation, leading to a more intuitive, scalable, and user-friendly experience. The new navigation system effectively housed all existing and future features, enhancing the app's usability and value proposition.

Users found it easier to navigate and access the app's rich content, while the product team could seamlessly integrate new functionalities. This project not only solved immediate challenges but also set the foundation for continued innovation and growth at Leva Clinic.

The "Today" Section is a place that patients can go to check progress of their prescriptions, look at consultation booking statuses, read featured articles and more. This is their home hub.

The "Learn" section houses all of Leva's articles, with future plans to create a category filtering and sorting system, alongside a content search function. The PMP is also accessed here.

The "Care" section is where patients can carry out all of their care related tasks, such as ordering prescriptions and checking their order progress, booking consultations and requesting treatment changes, alongside completing well being log entries.

Key Features

Research

I conducted competitor analysis to identify effective navigation designs in similar apps and to understand industry standards.

I also interviewed a group of Leva patients to gather feedback on the current app experience and learn about their preferred apps.

Ideation

Using the design system I had created, I rapidly developed mid-fidelity wireframes and user journeys, collaborating with the development team and product managers.

Testing

I used Maze to conduct user tests on selected concepts, identifying what patients found easy, challenging, and enjoyable. This guided the refinement process.

Refinement

Working closely with a developer, we designed separate navigation stacks for each journey, allowing users to easily cross-navigate features and maintain context. This collaborative effort solved complex problems effectively.

High Fidelity Prototype

I created a fully interactive, high-fidelity prototype to present to stakeholders, product managers, and the CEO. This prototype included animated interactions, a full component set, and brand fidelity.
