Background

The Pain Management Program (PMP) is a comprehensive 12-module digital course designed to help patients at Leva Clinic manage chronic pain. It includes animated videos, audio content, questionnaires, goal tracking, and mindfulness exercises. Initially, the PMP was available only on web platforms, separate from the clinic's app. This separation created accessibility issues for many patients, particularly those less familiar with technology. Additionally, the PMP's outdated user interface and cumbersome user experience discouraged patient engagement.

At the time, Leva Clinic’s primary value to patients was providing access to medical cannabis prescriptions and connecting them with clinical pain experts via the app. However, Leva wanted to enhance the therapeutic experience by offering ongoing support through an integrated in-app PMP.

Objective

The objective was to integrate the PMP into the Leva Clinic app, ensuring seamless interaction with the program's content. This integration aimed to enhance the overall value Leva offers to its patients, distinguishing it from other medical cannabis clinics and justifying subscription payments beyond prescriptions and appointments.

Introduction

Leva, a medical cannabis and pain management solutions clinic, identified a critical gap in their digital offerings: the Pain Management Program (PMP).

Initially available only on web platforms, the PMP was underutilised by patients due to its outdated interface and challenging user experience.

To bridge this gap and enhance patient support, we identified the need to integrate the PMP into the mobile app. This case study details the challenges faced, the strategic actions taken, and the impactful results of creating an in-app experience that offers patients seamless access to essential pain management resources.

Existing Patients

Previously, many patients were unaware of or unable to access the Pain management programme. Integrating it into the app ensured all patients could easily benefit from it, and could retain more patients long term.

Future Patients

The integration provided a unique and bespoke experience that set Leva apart from competitor Clinics, potentially attracting more patients with this unique value proposition.

Impact

The product managers anticipated the integration of the PMP into the app to have a significant impact on:

The Approach

The Result

The result was a streamlined, user-friendly MVP consisting of four core modules integrated directly into the app. With a clean, modern UI and an intuitive navigation experience, the PMP became significantly more accessible to patients.

It was prominently signposted from the app's home page and highlighted as the main feature in the resources section.

Key Features

Transcript toggle and a design hierarchy that supported various font sizes and user zoom settings.

Listen offline feature, allowing users to download the content directly to their device for later use.

In - app goal tracking, scoped as a seperate project but a vital part of the PMP's value.

Conclusion

This transformation not only enhanced the user experience but also reinforced Leva Clinic's commitment to providing comprehensive, ongoing support for chronic pain management.

Research revealed that non-Leva patients typically accessed the PMP through partnerships, registering and paying for access to the web-based system. Leva patients needed separate logins and often required one-time coupons for free access.

Interviews highlighted that patients would use the PMP if it were more accessible and that awareness of the program was low.

Research

• Videos had embedded closed captions, which were extracted and saved separately to provide a toggle feature for accessibility.

• Banners, illustrations, color themes, and iconography were created. SVG animations were developed to enhance the app experience, ensuring lightweight and high-quality visuals.

• All content was transferred to Prismic CMS, ready for app integration.

Content Audit

The design process focused on user familiarity and simplicity. Key actions included:

• Journey Mapping: Documented the current flow to integrate goal tracking, questionnaires, and mindfulness content effectively.

• UI Refresh: Updated the UI to align with Leva’s brand and existing design patterns. Created new components like module slidesheets, media players, and standard UI elements (buttons, toggles, inputs).

Feature Design

The process was iterative and involved collaboration with the development and product teams. User testing of an interactive prototype received positive feedback, leading to final iterations before handing over to developers.
